Seal Resuce & Huge Waves!

Man, the waves were HUGE today!! Driving to work along PCH, I've never seen so many surfers out on the water at Topanga Point, the waves were rolling in one after another, with small breaks between sets. They were perfect too-- weren't closing out early, 10-13 feet, the spray blowing over the crest... AWESOME! All the point breaks in Malibu had excellent, big waves.

We had a seal rescue at the center today too. Cindy and I went out to Leo Carrillo Beach and found a year-old Elephant Seal that had a deep injury, probably from a cookie-cutter shark. We came up with our rescue plan, recruited a couple of guys from the beach to help, and rescued the seal with those huge waves crashing behind us.

Traps

You know those sticky glue traps people use to catch mice and flies? They are BAD. Please don't use them. I'm constantly seeing wild animals being brought in to the wildlife center that have been stuck in those glue traps-- hummingbirds, snakes, songbirds, hawks, etc. Often times the animals will break their backs trying to get loose from a trap. It's extremely sad to see.

A kestrel (the smallest American hawk) was stuck in a trap, and (luckily) we were able to save most of its feathers and release in back into the wild this summer.

Just a couple days ago I released a Pacific Ringneck snake back into the wild. He'd come in stuck in a glue trap. This snake is harmless and helps keep the insect population down.

Just felt like I needed to pass this information on, hopefully people will stop using glue traps!
